Acknowledging ongoing Bonhoeffer reflections and interpretations, and receiving and introducing Bonhoeffer into the West African context in which his works and legacy have been largely neglected, Being A Disciple in a World Come of Age serves as an introduction and orientation to first-time readers of Bonhoeffer.  Written in conversation with the theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer on discipleship and his legacy, this volume addresses the problem of Christian identity from a West African context.

Musa further takes Bonhoeffer seriously in the context of post-apartheid South Africa, in which he studied under scholars passionate about reading and interpreting the life and works of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Just as in Germany, where Bonhoeffer arose as a Christian resistance voice and figure, so in South Africa he was used as a key scholar and example that helped the South African people to overcome the apartheid regime and help to give shape to the meaning of Christianity.

The first book on Bonhoeffer from a Nigerian context, Being A Disciple in a World Come of Age is a useful guide to know how best to address present-day religious and political challenges and provide better ecumenical modelling in Nigeria, South Africa and beyond.

Hassan Musa

Hassan Musa is a Christian theologian whose multidimensional interest in critical theology and philosophy made him to be a pioneer Bonhoeffer scholar in Nigeria. He teaches at ECWA Theological Seminary in Jos, Nigeria.

I warmly commend this scholarly and engaged book. Those who wish to travel with Bonhoeffer to Africa and beyond will find their horizons extended, their debt to Bonhoeffer deepened, and their commitment to live faithfully for community in a fragmenting and daunting world notably strengthened.

-- Keith Clements

This book by Nigerian theologian, Hassan Musa, is his bold reinterpretation of Bonhoeffer’s prophetic witness within rich, complex African contexts. The author focuses on the implications of Jesus’ radical invitation during his farewell speech, ‘Remain in me as I remain in you.’ Amidst life-threatening realities of our time with wars, corrupt rulers and extremist religious groups, Musa argues – eighty years after Bonhoeffer’s execution by the Nazis – that the call to costly discipleship in seeking justice and freedom remains a priority for followers of Jesus Christ.

-- Elna Mouton

A truly ground-breaking study of one of the greatest European Christian minds of the twentieth century from the point of view of a leading theological scholar in Africa. This book shows beyond question Bonhoeffer’s current relevance to global debates about poverty, equality, violence, race and Christian integrity. An exceptional achievement.
