In these lectures, delivered before an audience drawn from all faculties of the University of Munster, Professor Marxsen explores the meaning of the resurrection of Jesus. He discusses the relevant texts - the Apostles' Creed, the Gospels, Paul, and compares the different traditions. He looks carefully at what we can really know about the 'Easter events', at what the ancient texts set out to say and the ideas of which they made use. He then goes on to show in some detail how the traditions were developed in subsequent history and what it might mean today for a Christian to say 'Jesus is Risen'. The book ends with a chapter on the Christian's future hope. Professor Marxsen deliberately talks about the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. In so doing he means to stress that the Risen Christ is identical with the earthly Jesus. Those who lay stress on the resurrection must also remember the faith to which Jesus of Nazareth summoned men.
