The work of Marcella Maria Althaus-Reid is both groundbreaking and notoriously difficult to read, as it blends theories from post-colonial studies, queer studies, gender and sexuality studies, and feminist and liberation theologies. Offering a much needed introduction to the work of the theologian, Queer and Indecent shows the development of Althaus-Reid's core concepts - indigeneity, economic oppression, the body, indecency, heterosexuality, and sex, as well as setting her life in context with an overview of her stance on feminist teaching and activism, and her critique of Latin American liberation theology. Designed to introduce a new generation to her work, the book serves as both an indispensable guidebook and a launchpad for students to explore her extraordinary writing for themselves.

Thia Cooper

Thia Cooper is Professor of Religion at Gustavus Adolphus College, USA including Controversies in Political Theology: Development or Liberation? (2007) and A Theology of International Development (2020) . She has lectured widely in both the USA and Europe. Professor Cooper undertook her Master of Theology at Edinburgh's New College in 1999 and completed her PhD in 2005, both under Marcella Althaus-Reid.

We finally have a book length introduction an analysis of Marcella Althaus Reid--in my mind the most important liberation theologian of the end of the 20th century. She took liberation theology in new directions, incorporating sexuality in all its variants and expressions, so provocatively and creatively that she needed to coin a new term--indecent theology--to do justice to her project. Thia Cooper does a wonderful job of presenting every aspect of Althaus-Reid's thought. This is must read not just for people interested in Althaus-Reid. It is a must read for anyone seeking tools to develop a liberation theology for the 21st century. -- Ivan Petrella 'Cooper provides a step by step introduction to the important work of Marcella Althaus-Reid. This book is a valuable resource for students engaging with a multidisciplinary approach to theology which was the life blood of Althaus Reid. I encourage you to read it and get drawn into the worlds Althaus Reid creates which are so well laid out by Cooper.' -- Lisa Isherwood
