The SCM Studyguide: Early Christian Doctrine and the Creeds provides an accessible and student-friendly guide to the complex world of Early Christianity.

The author shows how the Creeds, used in many Christian churches today, are the result of often fierce theological, philosophical and political debates.

Each chapter discusses one specific creedal pronoucement explaining its original context and showing its development during the first five Christian centuries.

At every stage special attention is paid to the theological rationale of each statement within the framework of Early Christian doctrine, including necessary references to Hellenistic Judaism, late Hellenistic philosophy and alternative Christian views later labelled as 'heresies' (such as Gnosticism).
